Hong Kong Halloween.

Happy Halloween.

Happy Halloween.

Yes, it's that spooky time of year again, so today I went for a walk along Headland Drive and Seabee Lane, two of the streets in Discovery Bay which decorate their homes for Halloween. I went in the day time and I am a little bit early, so maybe not everyone has done their decorating yet, but there were certainly plenty of diabolically delightful displays.

I started at the management office on Headland Drive. There was lots to see here. On Halloween in the early evening a long queue of children will form here. They will all be dressed up in Halloween costumes and they will all be ready for trick or treating. This started as an activity for local children, but it really caught on and now people will flock here from all over Hong Kong for Halloween. Public transport to Discovery Bay on Halloween is always chock-a-block. I'm so glad I don't need to travel home from work during it like I used to in the past. It was hell.

Trick or treating will start at 4.30pm on Halloween.

Past the management office, I wandered along a sunny street filled with beautiful brightly coloured flowers. There was something totally incongruous about seeing all the skeletons, witches, ghosts, severed body parts and jack-o-lanterns in amongst the flora, but then I guess it's to be expected on Halloween.

This really sums up the death and flowers theme.

I googled quite a few collective nouns to help me in my descriptions of all the gruesome things on display.

There were covens of witches. I'm afraid I rather like the ones that have flown straight into walls.

There were also several hauntings of ghosts. Most of these looked fairly friendly as far as I could see.

Then there were many rattles of skeletons. Again they were mainly happy and smiling.

I saw a few shudders of clowns. I think this is a good collective noun for clowns, as they certainly make me shudder.

In addition, there were many patches of pumpkins. I'd have to say these were my favourites. They are really rather cute.

Plus there were quite a few clutters of spiders.

Disappointingly there weren't quite enough bats to make a colony.

Crossing from one of the decorated streets to the other there were beautiful views out over the sea.

After exploring these two streets, I walked to the beach and saw that it was being readied for dragon boat races. I checked later and found these are scheduled for Sunday.

When I arrived at the plaza, it was also looking pretty festive, so I took a few more photos here. Most of the decorations here were pumpkins.

Even when I went to do my grocery shopping, I found the supermarket was getting ready for Halloween.

Overall I think the jack-o'-lanterns are the stars of this year's Halloween displays. What's your favourite?

Hello, Irene! I see the entire city turns into a Halloween Museum...Thanks for enabling us to take a look at the festive atmosphere!

by Vic_IV

Hi Victor, it's not really the entire city, but certain areas are into Halloween. We just happen to live in one of them. It's quite good fun. All the best.

I loved the displays and they certainly don’t look too spooky in the daylight… maybe they are at night! I definitely agree that clowns are the scariest. Harry dressed up as a clown one Halloween and he won first prize.. scared me to bits and I helped him with the outfit!

by Catherine

Hi Catherine, not sure if I'll have time to go at night. Maybe I'll be a coward and just do the sunlight walk. Haha. Yes, definitely something very unfunny about clowns.

I like happy ghosts. Several of our neighbors have put out very cheerful, rotund little ghosts and I think they are very cute. I don't like scary things at all. We always carved smiling pumpkins for our Jack-o-lanterns.

I liked your fat pirate bear with his happy pumpkin friend.

by Beausoleil

Yes sometimes the scary ones can be a bit too much, can't they? Most of the ones on display weren't too scary.

it looks like everyone participates on this special day. Love your spooky pictures! :)

In the area where I live Halloween is a big thing because there's lots of Americans and Europeans. It's not big all over Hong Kong.
